What is cybersquatting?Well the term squatting is generally taken to mean the occupation of a property that is not yours. Cybersquatting is the online equivalent. In the mid 90's very few companies registered their domain names, the internet boom had not occured yet. As a result a number of other companies moved in to register these names. They then attempted to resell them to the owners for incredible sums.
How do I get a name back from a cybersquatter? There are two ways you can go about it. The first is to purchase the name from them. If the price is less than $1,000 then this is the best option. The second is to go through the ICAAN dispute resolution policy. The cost of this can be greater than $1,000. So it's worth trying to settle as early as possible.
Is Cybersquatting the same as stealing domain names? Not really. Stealing a domain name generally occurs when someone fools the registrar into releasing the domain name to you. Cybersquatting occurs when you've failed to register the name before them. Luckily both are becoming rarer thanks to the efforts of ICAAN in dispute resolution.
